Random Hacks of Kindness  take places on June 1-2, 2013. In Pretoria, Hackathon participants will use technology and their diverse thinking and practical skills to tackle some pressing social and humanitarian challenges. The hackathon will unite subject-matter experts, developers, academics, researchers and citizens in addressing issues relevant to local communities

We are partnering with Peace Corps and African School for Excellence who have various challenges that will be addressed by developers. For these challenges please visit the rhok website and search for problems under Pretoria, South Africa. 

Eligibility

  • Anyone can enter, but only teams will be evaluated
  • Challenges need to be from the presented challenges
  • Team need to be not more than 10 members with diverse skills
  • Teams can be anywhere and from everywhere
  • Open technologies must be use

Requirements

  • A working prototype (at least over 50% complete) need to be demonstrated during the presentation day (2nd June @15:00)
  • A presentation slide explaining what the project is about and progress made
  • A plan for completing the prototype
  • Code repository link (2nd June)
  • Youtube video explaining the prototype (1 July)
  • Website or blog about the website (1 July)
  • Brief report on the blog about progress made and future plans

  • Impact
    How much impact (quality and quantity) could the solution have? Could this solution solve a big problem or a little one? Could it make a big change or a little change on that problem?
  • Complexity
    How much progress did they make during the event? Did they start from scratch or build on an existing technology? How creative is the solution?
  • Sustainability
    How good is their plan for next steps? How prepared are they to continue their work beyond the event
  • Presentation
    How well did the team communicate? How well did they respond to questions from judges?
